Do You Need to Be in Shape Before Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

One of the most common concerns I hear from people thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that they don’t feel like they are in good enough shape to begin. Some people feel like they need to lose weight, become stronger, or improve their endurance before attending their first class.

The truth is you do not need to prepare yourself before walking through the door. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is something you learn one step at a time, and your fitness will improve naturally as you continue training. The best and only way to prepare for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is by doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

At Curtis Mateus BJJ, beginners are encouraged to move at their own pace. You are not expected to arrive in great shape or have any previous martial arts experience. My job is to meet you where you are, help you feel comfortable, and guide you through the process through proper teaching of fundamental techniques and movement patterns. If you have been thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I invite you to stop by, meet me, and experience your first class at your own pace.

Everyone Starts Somewhere

Walking into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy for the first time can feel intimidating. You may see experienced students moving confidently, remembering each step, and making everything look easy. What you do not see are all the times they felt confused, became tired, or struggled while learning.

Nobody walks into their first class already knowing what to do. Every experienced student had a first day when the movements felt unfamiliar and they needed help understanding the basics. They reached their current level through consistency, hard work, and the discipline to keep showing up even on difficult days.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu requires your body to move in ways that may be new to you. Even someone who regularly lifts weights or runs may feel tired during their first few classes. That does not mean they are out of shape. It simply means their body is adjusting to a new activity, just as every student’s body had to when they began.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Helps You Build Fitness

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body activity that can improve your endurance, strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and control over how your body moves. Instead of focusing on only one type of exercise, you use several of these abilities together during each class.

As you continue training, you will notice that you do not become tired as quickly, recover faster after physical activity, and move with more confidence and control. These improvements happen gradually through regular training. You do not need to achieve them before you begin.

A Workout That Keeps Your Mind Engaged

What makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu different from a traditional workout is that you are not simply repeating movements. You are learning how to respond to the weight, movement, and resistance of another person. That may mean creating space when you are being held down, finding a safe way to escape, maintaining control, or recognizing when it is time to try a different approach. Each situation requires you to think, adjust, and remain calm while your body is working. Because your mind is focused on learning what to do next, the workout often feels more engaging than running on a treadmill or repeating the same exercises at the gym. Each class gives you something new to learn and another opportunity to improve.

You can train at your own pace

Beginners are not expected to keep up with advanced students. During your first classes, your main goal should be to learn the basic movements and become comfortable on the mats.

It is completely acceptable to slow down, take a break, or ask questions. If you have an injury, physical limitation, or health concern, let me know before or during any point in the class. This allows me to adjust the training when necessary and help you participate safely.

Trying to do too much during your first class usually makes the experience more difficult. You do not need to prove anything. Focus on breathing, listening, and practicing each movement with control.

Technique matters more than strength

Many beginners assume they need to be strong to succeed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Strength can be helpful, but BJJ is built around leverage, positioning, timing, and technique.

A major part of learning Jiu-Jitsu is discovering how to use your body efficiently. Instead of relying only on strength, you learn how to create frames, maintain balance, control space, and use the proper angle.

This is one of the reasons BJJ appeals to so many different people. You do not need to have a certain body type or athletic background to begin learning. You improve by understanding the techniques and practicing them consistently.

Your conditioning will improve over time

Your first few classes may feel challenging, and that is normal. You are learning when to use energy and when to relax. Beginners often become tired quickly because they tense their entire body and try to use maximum effort during every movement.

Over time, you will learn to stay calmer and use your energy more efficiently. Your conditioning will improve, but so will your ability to control your breathing and recognize when you need to work and when you need to relax.

Progress does not happen all at once. It comes from attending class, practicing the fundamentals, and making small improvements every week. Progress might be tough for you to notice in the beginning this is a normal part of the process.

Do not let fitness become an excuse to wait

It is easy to tell yourself that you will start after losing a few pounds or getting into a better routine. The problem is that there may never feel like a perfect time.

You do not need to prepare for BJJ by doing BJJ somewhere else first. The best way to find out whether training is right for you is to try a class.

At Curtis Mateus BJJ, I want beginners to feel comfortable learning without believing they must prove themselves. I built the academy as a beginner-friendly environment focused on clean training, discipline, technique, and steady progression. Come in as you are. I will help you from there.
